The doctrine of the Second Coming is deeply uncongenial to the whole evolutionary or developmental character of modern thought. We have been taught to think of the world as something that grows slowly towards perfection, something that "progresses" or "evolves." Christian Apocalyptic offers us no such hope.
It is the medicine our condition especially needs.
Nowhere is salvation conceived of as a flight from history as in Greek thought; it is always the coming of God to man in history.
Man does not ascend to God; God descends to man.

Precisely because we cannot predict the moment, we must be ready at all moments.
Jesus is now the Lord; He is enthroned at the right hand of God; He is reigning in His kingdom. But this is a Lordship and a kingly
reign which is known only to believers. It must be confessed by faith. His Second Coming will mean nothing less than the Lordship which is His now
will be visible to all the world. When we pray, "Thy kingdom come," this is what we are praying for: the effectual and universal rule of Christ in
all the world, not only over believers
