God seeth the first good motions and stirring of our hearts toward Him, and He needs must do so, for He stirreth them up in us; there is no sacred fire upon our altar, but first cometh down from heaven.
What matters supremely, therefore, is not, in the last analysis, the fact that I know God, but the larger fact which underlies it - the fact that He knows me.
God foreknows what will be because he has decreed what shall be. It is therefore a reversing of the order of Scripture, a putting of the cart before the horse, to affirm that God elects because he foreknows people. The truth is, he "foreknows" because he has elected.
The wheel of providence revolves, but its axle is eternal love.
When you come to knowing God, the initiative lies on His side. If He does not show Himself, nothing you can do will enable you to find Him.
Why He draweth one and draweth not another, seek not thou to judge, if thou wish not to err.
Tract. super Joan. xxvi
