Hey, Michele... one of my favorite parts in The Searchers is when Ward Bond leads a party out, complete with top hat, to apprehend the Injuns and he meets up with the Mexicans at the Rio Grande... it's great!

The Duke actually married three Latinas:

"He lived with his third wife, Pilar Palette Wayne, who was born in Peru, in an 11-room, seven-bathroom, $175,000 house in Newport Beach, Calif., where he had a 135-foot yacht... Mr. Wayne's first two marriages, to Josephine Saenz and Esperanzo Bauer, also Latin Americans, ended in divorces. He had seven children from his marriages, and more than 15 grandchildren."

When I was a kid, we used to boat around his yacht, a converted minesweeper, in Newport Harbor. One time I saw him crossing the street down there. He seemed taller than in the movies, but the most memorable thing was that his hair was redder than I thought.

Now I have to see the Searchers. I first became a John Wayne fan in The Quiet Man and I now also enjoy many of his other films. But then, I am married to a Marine - so it's kinda required.(grin)

OK, I'll admit, I've made fun of John Wayne. I don't hate him, but his war movies are cheesy. He never really acts like someone in the middle of a real battle. But, I do like him, because I feel like I'd be a commie or something if I didn't. It would be like hating your Grandpa. Plus, didn't he like Mexicans a lot? He's in with me.
You've whet my appetite before describing "The Searchers", and this blog did it again. I must see it.

I have never seen The Searchers. I remember too when it was vogue to make fun of John Wayne. They did that in my generation as well. However, Wayne is cool in my book, even if he did make his share of stinkers (what good actor has never had a stinker?). Maybe it's a generational thing though, but I've always preferred Eastwood to Wayne.
